Specialized software is not required to perform robust risk assessments. In fact, common platforms offer significant advantages over commercial packages purportedly designed specifically for risk assessment. Offered here are ideas for using spreadsheets and databases (desktop or enterprise) to perform the bulk of risk assessment and risk management tasks. In addition, GIS platforms have become an indispensable part of data acquisition, processing, and display. All of these platforms–spreadsheet, database, GIS–are now ubiquitous and have powerful free versions available.
